A family packing list organised around the day

Pack the day bag first

A useful packing list starts with what happens between leaving one room and reaching the next. Choose a small bag that an adult can comfortably carry while handling the other things your family needs. Keep travel documents and essential items accessible without unpacking a suitcase.

  • Travel documents and booking details, with a secure backup.
  • Water, appropriate snacks, tissues, and a small rubbish bag.
  • A change of clothes for younger children.
  • Weather-appropriate protection and a light extra layer.
  • A charged phone and a compatible power bank where permitted.
  • One quiet activity your child already enjoys.

Keep the hotel kit separate

Pack sleep items, spare clothes, toiletries, and chargers where you can find them on the first night. Ask the accommodation about cot availability, bed arrangements, laundry facilities, and storage space before relying on them. “Family friendly” is less useful than a confirmed answer to your specific question.

Plan the amount of clothing around an actual laundry opportunity. If you intend to wash mid-trip, check that the relevant facilities are available instead of leaving it to chance. A modest bag that closes easily is easier to repack than one filled to its limit.

Let the route decide the bulky items

A stroller, carrier, and large suitcase each solve different problems and create different carrying demands. Review your station access, accommodation entrances, and the kind of outings you are planning. Do not buy an extra item only because a generic packing list includes it.

Check airline and transport rules for baggage, batteries, and other restricted items directly. For medicines, check Japan’s current official entry requirements before departure rather than relying on a packing blog.

Do one practice pack

Pack once before the final evening, lift everything, and imagine walking through a station. Remove duplicates that do not have a clear purpose. Leave room for what you will carry during the day, and agree how bags will be divided between adults.

A useful final check is simple: can you reach your tickets, a change of clothes, and a phone charger without emptying the whole bag?
